WJR Business Beat Transcript

Good morning, Paul.

Great news for Detroit! Apple has just announced that it is opening its first U.S. Developer Academy in downtown Detroit. This is a huge win for our region for so many reasons.

According to a press release posted on the Apple website, the Detroit Academy is part of a hundred-million-dollar racial equality and justice initiative to help dismantle systematic barriers to opportunity and to combat injustices faced by communities of color.

The Detroit-based Apple Developer Academy is aimed at the black entrepreneur and developer community in the Detroit region. The Academy is designed to empower young black entrepreneurs, creators and coders, helping them to cultivate the skills necessary for jobs in the rapidly-growing iOS app economy.

Launched in collaboration with Michigan State University, Apple Developer Academy courses will be open to all learners across Detroit, regardless of their academic background or whether they have any previous coding experience.

Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, had this to say:

We are all accountable to the urgent work of building a more just, more equitable world, and these new projects send a clear signal of Apple’s enduring commitment… working together to empower communities that have borne the brunt of racism and discrimination far too long. We are honored to bring this vision to bear, and to match our words and actions to the values of equity and inclusion we have always prized at Apple, said Cook.

How cool, Paul, that Detroit has been selected as the first of these academies. It will help our young people with educational opportunities and the red-hot field of coding and position them for exciting job opportunities in the future. It’s going to expand our available high-tech workforce here in the region, and it adds to the overall culture of entrepreneurship that continues to accelerate in and around Detroit.

Thank you, Apple, for picking us.

I’m Jeff Sloan, founder and CEO of StartupNation.com, and that’s today’s Business Beat on the Great Voice of the Great Lakes, WJR.
